Michelle + Mark + Natalie + Nick

By Anne Almasy | Portraits | November 26, 2008 |

I’m so glad Mary and Steve referred us to Michelle! It was wonderful to meet this family and create some photographs of them in their north Atlanta home!

The weather was chilly, but we took full advantage of the warm sun!

A few years ago, Natalie fell out of this very tree and broke her arm!  Thankfully this day was not so eventful!

Michelle told me that the piano you see to the left has been in their family for many years.

Nellie is the family’s first dog, and she is VERY photogenic!

Nick takes fencing classes!  How cool is that?!?  He showed me all kinds of sweet moves.

He looks so handsome in his mask!

Natalie plays tennis… and soccer… and basketball… and softball… and… well, you get the pictures.  This girl is good at pretty much anything she sets her mind to!

Big thanks to Michelle, Mark, Natalie, and Nick for sharing your weekend with me!

Christine + Roger

By Anne Almasy | Portraits | November 25, 2008 |

We met Christine and Roger in June of 2004, in line for the grand opening of IKEA here in Atlanta.  Although “in line” doesn’t really do our meeting justice.  Roger and Dan were actually the first two people in a HUGE line for prizes and giftcards, and they spent a total of SIX DAYS in the hot summer sun waiting to be the first people to enter IKEA.  Craziness, right?

We are forever blessed to have gained the friendship of two of the most wonderful people we have ever met!  Christine and Roger are enormously giving, completely brilliant, jarringly funny, and absolutely meant for one another.

Our friends:

Love the way Christine’s hair flies away with the wind!

We love you guys to pieces!  Thank you for a wonderful three-and-a-half years!

Engaged! Julie + Ian

By Anne Almasy | E-Shoots | November 25, 2008 |

In October, I visited Texas with my mom. It was a really special trip for many reasons: it was the last time I saw my grandfather before he passed away, and it was the FIRST time I got to meet Julie, my cousin Ian’s fiance.

Julie is so beautiful, so funny, so smart, and SO perfect for Ian! I’m so happy that my cousin found such an awesome woman to share his life with!

We started photo early in the morning, when the air was crisp and the light was WONDERFUL…

Ian’s last name is Whitley, and this “W” hangs on the gate of Julie and Ian’s ranch.  JUST KIDDING.  Actually this gate is across the street from Aunt Terry and Uncle Rick’s house, and belongs to their neighbor.  Ian had never even noticed it before.  I told him he can show it off to his Air Force buddies and pretend he’s a wealthy Texas rancher.

This is my favorite:

Julie and Ian, I love you guys! I can’t wait for the rest of the family to see you together!

Amy + Brant + Ivy

By Anne Almasy | Portraits | November 19, 2008 |

Little Miss Ivy is ONE!

This munchkin was a baby bump just one short year ago!  {see photos}  I’m so glad Amy wanted to get together again for photographs of the new family!

Ivy loved the enormous colorful leaves that were scattered around the park.

Married! Allison + Jeff

We have seriously waited for a LONG TIME to shoot at Barnsley Gardens! This has been a dream venue of ours since we got married in 2004, and we were ecstatic when we learned that Allison and Jeff were planning their wedding there!

(Because both of us always have something to say, we’re trying something new for this wedding post.  Below you’ll find our individual comments about some of our favorites photos.)

Anne: An ongoing theme (of sorts) throughout the day was how much Allison loves to laugh.  This is the very first photograph I took of her on her wedding day, and… she was laughing.  It’s just so telling of her personality, and the robe and her hair in curlers make the moment extra cute.

Dan: Jeff was getting ready in another cottage.  I like the motion of his belt whipping around.

Anne: I just LOVED Allison’s Ravini gown.  It was STUNNING on her.  I imagine that when she tried it on she heard angels singing.

All of the perfect hair and makeup was done 3ntourage’s Sarah Luke.

Dan: This was an off-moment while taking the groomsmen portraits. I had planned on doing something a little different for their portraits, but the bright sun kinda ruined my plans. To me, this moment was just a cool visual contrast between the grays/greens of the porch and the black suits with all of the guys shoes.

Anne: The colors in the ruins at Barnsley are just… astonishing!  I had to work to find usable angles because there were tables set up for cocktail hour, but stuff like this was just so great.

Anne: Jeff’s daughters were there when Dan and I did Jeff and Allison’s E-Shoot, so they already knew us and were pretty excited to be photographed again.  They were SO cooperative and precious… I just wanted to wrap them up in a big hug at the end of the night!

Allison and Jeff’s florist Karen Phillips (send me your web link, Karen!) was A-MAZING!

Anne: The pavilion behind the arbor where Allison and Jeff had their ceremony was really deep, so I was able to hide out in there for the whole ceremony and get these really great angles that I don’t usually have access to without being too conspicuous.  Seeing Allison and her dad walk in from Jeff’s perspective was quite an honor.

Dan: This is Jeff’s face when he first saw Allison walk out with her dad.

Anne: At some point during the ceremony I turned around and saw this beautiful sunlight gleaming through the trees and the beams of the pavilion roof.  It just makes me feel warm inside to see a scene like this.

Dan: Jeff’s daughters were invited up to share in a prayer of blessing over the new family.

Anne: Everyone was headed back to the arbor for portraits when I saw Allison’s grandmother wiping her eyes.  I’m really glad to have captured this moment.  This picture actually reminds me a lot of my great-grandmother who was very special to me.  I suppose that makes me love it even more!

Dan: Typically, for the “introduction” of the couple into the reception, Anne and I post up on either side of the room. This time I opted for a different position, and went behind them and followed them as they entered. I was pretty happy with how it turned out, and I feel like you get a better sense of what it must be like to walk in facing all those people cheering you on. Trying new things pays off sometimes!

Anne: Jeff’s daughters participated in everything — even the cake-cutting!  I love the way his youngest daughter is holding his finger as he reaches for the knife.

The cakes were created by the amazing artists at The Frosted Pumpkin.

Dan: The Ruins are pretty amazing. The entire place has an amazing ambience, and it’s even more true in the evening. I love how they used uplighting to play up the drama of the architecture. The contrast of the blues in the night sky with the warm tones of the bricks and lights stood out to me.

The first dance…

Anne:  This is just such a funny moment to me!  Kid dances are the best!

Anne: I don’t even remember who shot this.  I just know that it’s really wonderful in a truly bizarre way.  I’m very attached to this photo.

Anne: It was SO perfect when Jeff’s older daughter caught the bouquet!  She was ecstatic, and everyone clapped and cheered for her.

Anne: This is Allison and Jeff’s pastor gettin’ down on the dance floor.  This is a funny photograph regardless of who’s in it, but I think it’s so much better that it’s their pastor!  Usually our “pastor pictures” are so formal.  I love that this reverend was out there celebrating with everyone!

Anne: At the end of the night Allison’s dad asked me if we’d had the chance to photograph the fountain, and I was happy to say, yes, as a matter of fact… we did.  I’m obsessed with the motion of the clouds and the water in this shot!

Dan: Once again, I went for a different approach for Allison and Jeff’s exit shot, and got behind them as they left. I knew there were going to be sparklers and more importantly, smoke. I set up an extra light that was firing straight at me, which would completely illuminate the smoke creating a nice glowing effect.

Anne: I don’t know if people expect the amount of smoke you get from sparklers, but I honestly think it’s WAY cooler than if you only saw sparks!  It’s like Allison and Jeff are emerging from the future (?)! Ha.

Allison and Jeff, your wedding was truly a dream wedding!  We certainly have to give a give shout-out to Becky, Allison’s mom, who did so much of the legwork to make this celebration a reality, and to Barnsley’s Greg Teague, who took such good care of us.  We’re so honored to have been a part!

Big hugs-

Elizabeth, Class of 2009

By Anne Almasy | Portraits | November 14, 2008 |

YAY!  Another one of my metro-west girls!  (Thanks, Christina, Mindy, and Lauren!)

It was so lovely to meet not only Elizabeth, but also her sister, mom, and grandmother!  Elizabeth has a really tender heart, and hopes to work in children’s hospice when she finishes college.  I know she’ll bring a wonderful spirit of hope and peace to the people she meets.

We started with a photograph of Elizabeth’s hand with her grandmother’s, a special request by her mom.

Cute boots!

Elizabeth and her baby sister…

Mom and daughters… (Didn’t Elizabeth do a great job coordinating their outfits?)

Elizabeth, thank you so much for spending your precious weekend hours with me!  It was so great to meet you!

Married! Sarah + Dan

Note from Anne: I studied photography at HIP with Sarah, and I was SOOOOOOOOO excited and honored when she e-mailed asking if we would photograph her wedding in upstate New York!  I got to see not only Sarah, but also Jen, Lyndsie, and Senta, three other girls I went to photo school with!  This made things REALLY silly and TOTALLY fun!

Sarah and Dan are one of those couples who knew EXACTLY what their wedding day was about, and there was literally NOTHING that could happen to ruin it for them — including a sudden downpour just seconds before they were about to walk down the aisle for their garden ceremony. We scrambled to cover our cameras (and ourselves) under huge garbage bags while the guests all popped open umbrellas. Weather notwithstanding, everyone was so completely joyful the entire day! We couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful celebration!

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves…

The day started bright and early in Sarah’s hotel room, where she took a quick smoke break before getting ready.

Jen laces up the back of Sarah’s dress.

Sarah stands on the bed and instructs Senta on how to hold the mirror for the best full-length view.

The wedding party wore a combo of Converse Chucks and Adidas Sambas.  Here is “Team Chucks”:

The celebration was held at Beardslee Castle, a 148-year-old replica of an Irish castle.  Visit the website’s “History” page to read some really spooky ghost stories about the castle!

Sarah and Dan show off their shoes upon seeing each other for the first time.

The wedding party.

Sarah…

…and Dan.

Regan’s little shoes.

The girls wait under umbrellas for the ceremony to start.  At this point it was REALLY raining!

The rain didn’t dampen the mood one bit!

Sarah’s dad escorts her down the aisle while her mom looks on.  Two guys from Dan’s band Honeycreeper played music during the ceremony.

Dan’s parents take in the ceremony.

Dan holds Sarah’s ring against his rain-splattered suit jacket.

Friends and family look on.

Wait a minute… YES!  Sarah put Dan’s ring on the wrong hand!  Haha.  (He fixed it before they kissed.)

Kiss!

Dan and Sarah enter the reception.

The first dance…  We love that Sarah is wearing her camera!

Regan kept herself entertained by playing under the tables and sneaking licks of icing off of Sarah and Dan’s cake!

Regan tastes the icing (again) while Sarah and Dan cut the cake.

Dan and Sarah had an “Equal Opportunity Bouquet Toss”, allowing both girls AND guys to try to catch the bouquet!

The first catch:

The second catch:

Sarah cracks up while dancing with some of her friends from Respite House where she works.  (Respite House is an incredible retreat for adults with special needs who want a little break from their families.  Many of Sarah’s friends and colleagues from Respite attended the wedding, and they partied like true rock stars!)

Regan discovers the joy of party favors.

When the rain let up, I snagged Sarah and Dan for a few more portraits.

We had a REALLY hard time narrowing the photos for this post!  We also spent time at Sarah and Dan’s rehearsal dinner, and at the after-party at Dan’s house, but in the end we decided to share just photos from the wedding itself.  If you want to see more, check out the slideshow!

Thank you SO much, Sarah and Dan, for bringing us to New York to celebrate with you!

*NEW!* Art Album for Ashley + Josh

By Dan & Anne Almasy | Books & Albums, Design, Products | November 3, 2008 |

Ashley and Josh got married in 2007, and it was so fun to go back to their photographs and create an album for them!

Ashley and Josh are our FIRST recipients of our brand new Art Album! The Art Album is nearly identical to our Signature Album, with a gorgeous liquid laminate finish on the pages (to prevent peeling) and lay-flat binding (so you get large, panoramic layouts). The Art Book is great if you’re looking for thinner pages (which allows MORE pages in an album), and a slightly lower price point.

Here is Ashley and Josh’s laser-engraved faux-leather cover:

Thin, pliant pages:
